Distressed floors are HOT in 2020.

The distressed floor style has been around for quite a while but has become even more popular just recently. The cherished, time-honored tradition of handcrafting is joined with the benefits of modern engineering and refinishing, creating a floor without peer. Each plank of flooring is sculpted to create a rustic, antique appeal along with old-world charm

The traditional and not so traditional distressed wood options

The next few years  expect to see more homeowners opt for that luxury aged look in their flooring. Distressed wooden flooring is a particular style that is designed to give an old and worn feel to a new hardwood floor.

Distressed boards tend to come with a textured finish that enhances the grain of the wood. They also tend to be an extra rustic grade meaning the floors feature their fair share of knots, blemishes, cracks and natural features within the timber – giving it the character and charm that many desire in their homes.

A good quality distressed engineered oak floorboard will provide you with all the strength, stability and reliability of a well-made engineered oak floor with the characteristics similar to an old reclaimed floorboard.

While the wood used for distressed flooring is rustic in its grade, not all rustic flooring is distressed. You can get rustic engineered oak flooring, which will feature many knots and natural features, without the textured grain, large splits within the timber and rough edges.

You can get super creative by putting some surprising colours into your distressed flooring mix!

The distressed look works best for spaces where a beautiful rustic feel  is desired.  In preparing distressed wood flooring, various actions are taken depending on the degree and style of “distress” desired. The edges of each wood plank are hand scraped, swirl and kerf markings are added to imitate historic wood and the planks are brushed to remove glossing and give them a soft worn texture.

Prefer a more industrial edge ?

If wood flooring is not your cup of tea, you can also opt for the increasingly popular distressed concrete flooring. In 2020, the distressed concrete floor style will receive more attention as homeowners look for alternatives to traditional wood flooring.  As with distressed wood, distressed concrete goes through artificial processes to minimize the highly polished look and produce an enhanced worn out patina. Distressed concrete flooring can be integrated into most types of decors but works best in industrial and contemporary home styles.
