Trent and Rhonda have recently welcomed a new baby grandson into their world. If like them you have babies in your life ( or are hoping for some ) then you may be involved in decorating a nursery or two. If you love carpet but are unsure if it is the right flooring for a nursery you will enjoy our latest carpet tip!

WOOL CARPET

Probably the top choice would be a natural fiber wool carpet. This way, you avoid exposure to most (if not all) synthetic material all together. Wool is naturally soil and stain resistance, and it holds it’s colour really well. Also, where you aware that wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture WITHOUT feeling wet?
What this mean, is that in our warmer Saskatchewan evening when it gets hoot and humid conditions it will absorb some moisture. This in turn will  make the room feel cooler, less humid and just more comfortable for baby!

Wool naturally repels dirt and liquids,  so if you spill something or there is an ‘ accident’ when changing baby, the liquid will tend remain at the surface and won’t sink down into the fiber as much as other soft carpeting options.

Finally, if allergies or asthma runs in the family, wool carpeting is a great choice.

PLUSH CARPET

If you’re looking for something soft, then we would recommend getting a plush carpet. Our best advice would be not to choose one that is 1 solid colour ( definitely NOT white or too light) . A flecked carpet will camouflage the dirt and the stains. Soft carpets are nice for babies and toddlers. It’s a great option for babies to learn to crawl and for you and your baby to play on together

Just a warning , these carpets are harder to clean, and they do trap dirt a bit more. But, they also keep the space cozier and quieter.

In terms of carpet fiber, it’s really your choice. We suggest coming in store and feeling the options for yourself . Generally, for most customers, we recommend nylons as these are more durable. They also tend to be softer and look nicer. Polyesters are more colorfast and generally cost a bit less. Carpet technologies have come a long way, so now some of these carpets are much softer than they were 10 years ago. Ask us about stain repelling options.

BERBER CARPET

These are looped carpets that are generally flecked or multi-tonal, so they help camouflage the dirt. The big benefit is that they are easier to clean, but on the downside these carpets are not as soft as plush or wool carpets.

When to install the carpet?

If we have swayed you towards choosing carpet for the nursery, it’s ideal to have it installed before your baby arrives, so you can allow a couple of weeks for the room to air out.
